Frequently Asked Questions

Have a question? We’re here to help.

What are Sumatriptan tablets?

Sumatriptan is a form of medication from the triptan class, these tablets are commonly used to treat migraine attacks. The mechanism of action of Sumatriptan is complex and not fully understood but it is partially due to a desensitisation of some of the nerves of the head.

Sumatriptan tablets are taken once a migraine or cluster headache has already started, it does not prevent an attack. Sumatriptan is not the same as a painkiller but you can use these tablets if your normal painkillers or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (such as Ibuprofen) have not worked.

Sumatriptan tablets and nasal spray are available on prescription. It usually takes 30-60 minutes for Sumatriptan tablets to start working. The usual dose of Sumatriptan tablets is 50mg but some patients might be prescribed 100mg tablets if necessary.

How do you take Sumatriptan tablets?

When you buy Sumatriptan it will come in a tablet which is to be taken orally. Sumatriptan is best to take at the first sign of a migraine. If symptoms return after 2 hours or longer, a second tablet is required. If symptoms do not improve after the first tablet at all then DO NOT take a second tablet. Instead, you should call your doctor. They will give you advice about the number of tablets you should take in 24 hours. Always follow the instruction on your prescription.

If instructions are not followed, such as taking more Sumatriptan tablets than recommended or for longer than recommended, then migraines could increase in severity. This includes any other headache relief medication as well.

Side effects of Sumatriptan tablets?

  • Tight chest
  • Feeling/being sick
  • Tiredness
  • Dizziness

Absolute lifesaver, I get frequent migraines and my local surgery is very stingy about prescribing these so when I found e-Surgery I was very pleased.
